Hot Potato — Sprint, dash, and pass the ticking potato — play solo against bots or with friends

Hot Potato is the fast-paced action game in the GameBuddies lineup — no prompts, no voting, just reflexes. You sprint and dash around an arena passing a ticking potato before it explodes in your hands. The timer is random, so every pass is a gamble: hold too long and you might be the one it detonates on; panic-pass too early and you have wasted stamina you will want later. Play solo against bots that sprint, dodge and juke like real players, or fill the arena with up to 8 friends. Rounds last 30-90 seconds, it works with touch controls on phones, and elimination rounds keep going until one player is left standing.

Hot Potato is a free online party game for 1+ players — no download, no sign-up. It runs in any browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile.

How to Play Hot Potato

  1. Join the game — Create a room or join one with a code — 2-8 players enter the arena. Playing alone? Add bot opponents in the lobby and the arena fills up instantly.
  2. Learn the controls — Move around the arena, sprint for speed, dash for a burst. On desktop you play with the keyboard; on phones the game switches to touch controls built for thumbs.
  3. Manage your stamina — Sprinting and dashing drain a stamina bar, and when it empties you slow to a crawl — the worst possible state when someone is chasing you with a potato. Pacing wins games: save a dash for the moment the potato-holder locks onto you.
  4. Pass the hot potato — If you are holding the potato, close the distance to another player and pass it before the timer runs out. The potato gets hotter with every pass, ratcheting the panic up as the round goes on.
  5. Survive the explosion — The timer is random. When it hits zero the potato explodes and whoever is holding it is eliminated. The arena shrinks in player count round after round until one survivor takes the win.

Features

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play alone?

Yes! Add bot opponents in the lobby. Bots sprint, dash, and dodge just like real players — they even respect fog-of-war in Blind and Flash modes.

Does Hot Potato work on mobile?

Hot Potato has mobile-optimized touch controls built for smartphone play. It works on both desktop and mobile.

How long is each round?

Rounds run 30-90 seconds depending on settings. The random timer means you never know when it goes off.

What is the stamina system?

Sprinting and dashing drain your stamina bar. When it empties, you slow down. You need to pace yourself to time your escapes.

Is Hot Potato free?

Yes — free in the browser like every GameBuddies game. Create a room or jump in solo against bots; no download, no account.

Any tips for winning?

Never burn your whole stamina bar running away early. Stay mid-pack, keep a dash in reserve for when the holder targets you, and when YOU get the potato, pass it to whoever just wasted their stamina — they cannot escape.
